The Museletter

Never let the truth get in the way of a good story

Issue 019·Nov 15, 2022·2 minute read

El Museletter Part Dix-Neuf

Reality is fluid, in a manageable sense.

What most people call confidence is, structurally, a small amount of reality-bending. The founder who acts as though her startup will succeed is acting on a future state that doesn't exist yet. The athlete who walks to the line believing he'll make the shot is rehearsing an outcome that has not arrived. The lawyer who tells a juror her client is innocent is asserting a state of the world that is, at the moment of assertion, contested.

All three are bending reality. None of them is lying. The difference is what they're bending toward.

The healthy version of reality-bending pulls the world toward an attainable target. The founder works the eighty-hour weeks. The athlete trained for six years. The lawyer studied the file. The bend is real, but it has a tether — the bender is doing the work that closes the gap between the asserted reality and the actual one.

The pathological version pulls toward an unattainable one. The same founder, but with no product. The same athlete, but with no practice regime. The same lawyer, but no preparation. The assertion is identical. The work behind it is absent.

The bend without the work is delusion. The work without the bend is paralysis. Most accomplished people I know operate in the narrow corridor between the two — bending reality enough to motivate the work, not enough to skip it.

The discipline isn't about telling the truth. The discipline is about being willing to do what you'd have to do to make the bent reality the real one.

The world’s most irregular periodical.
